Pueblo Viejo is the second largest high sulphidation gold deposit known after Yanacocha in Peru. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is located 110 km north of Santo Domingo in hilly, jungle covered terrain at an altitude of around 300 meters. The mine produced 5.4 Moz Au and 24.7 Moz Ag from oxide and transition ore between 1975 and 1999. The original oxide reserve was 27 Mt @ 4.23 g/t Au and 21.6 g/t Ag (cut off 1.4 g/t Au). Mining stopped when the sulphides were reached.
Barrick acquired the Pueblo Viejo project through its acquisition of Placer Dome and, pursuant to an agreement with Goldcorp, sold a 40% interest in the project to Goldcorp. Barrick are currently completing a feasibility study on the project.
The Pueblo Viejo project contains reserves (Sulphide) of 20.4 million ounces of gold, 423.6 billion pounds of copper and 117.3 million ounces of silver
Further information regarding the Pueblo Viejo project can be found on the Barrick website.
